What is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel is typically produced by a reaction
of oil or fat with a short chain alcohol such as methanol
or ethanol in presence of a catalyst (potassium hydroxide)
to yield mono-alkylesters of long chain fatty acids (fatty
acid methyl ester, or FAME). This reaction
is a transesterification and yields glycerol as a valuable
coproduct.
